HEALTH – NHS FUNDING - 11 January 1999

Dr Julian Lewis: The Secretary of State has referred to long memories. Does not he recall that under the previous Labour Government, nurses' pay fell by 3 percent and that during the 18 years of Conservative Government, it rose by 70 percent? Does not he understand that people are becoming exasperated with him boasting again and again to the House about distributing millions here and billions there, while they open their papers and discover that he is admitting that the health service is in crisis? Does not that reveal that the Government's actions smack more of creative accountancy than caring services?
