BUSINESS QUESTION – OUTDOOR FACILITIES & SUPPORT FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY - 04 June 2020

BUSINESS QUESTION – OUTDOOR FACILITIES & SUPPORT FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY - 04 June 2020

Dr Julian Lewis: May we have a statement in Government time about the situation of zoos and wildlife parks, which are desperate to reopen and should not be kept waiting until 4 July?

Is there a possibility that the Leader of the House, the shadow Leader of the House and the Speaker might come together to decide whether there is any way in which we, as a House, can show solidarity and support for Britain’s black community in the shocking aftermath of the slow-motion murder of George Floyd on the streets of our democratic ally, the United States?

[The Leader of the House of Commons (Mr Jacob Rees- Mogg): I will, if I may, answer the second question first. It was such a shocking scene, and I can only repeat what the Holy Father said, which is that racism is a sin, and murder is a mortal sin, and anyone seeing those pictures must watch them in horror. It is difficult to change from that subject to talking about zoos, although they are important to the people who run them. I understand the point my right hon. Friend has made and I will ensure that it is taken up with my colleagues in government.]

NOTE: At 11am on Tuesday, 9 June, one minute's silence was observed in the House of Commons by permission of Mr Speaker.
