POINT OF ORDER – BYERS, MOORE & SIXSMITH - 08 May 2002

Dr Julian Lewis: Further to that point of order, Madam Deputy Speaker. Will you take this opportunity to reaffirm the guidance given to me and other new Members of the 1997 intake by Speaker Boothroyd that, as Members, we enjoy the privilege of being able to say what we like in the House without suffering the risk of defamation proceedings? Do you agree, Madam Deputy Speaker, that if a Secretary of State has not only misled the House but has defamed an individual in the way that Mr Sixsmith was defamed, the individual is entitled to expect a withdrawal in the House and for his name to be cleared?
