The Times – 9 October 1998
As someone more closely and directly involved than Kenneth Clarke in opposing Labour Marxists and CND in the 1980s, I can vouch for the inaccuracy and perversity of his comparison between those extremists and anti-single European currency Conservatives (report, October 7). Opinion polls then showed heavy majorities against far-Left policies and unilateralism. Opinion polls now show heavy majorities in favour of keeping our own currency and rejecting the euro.
Whilst Michael Foot moved Labour away from public opinion on nuclear weapons in the 1980s, William Hague is bringing the Conservatives into line with public opinion on the crucial issue of saving the pound.
