'ADJUSTING LABOUR POLICY ON CRUISE'

Independent – 23 March 1987

According to reports (19 March), Mr Kinnock now concedes that the United States would not be forced by a Labour government to remove cruise missiles whilst negotiations were continuing to eliminate American and Soviet intermediate nuclear forces together.

What he has not told us is what a Labour government would do if no agreement were reached with the Soviet Union. Would cruise be allowed to stay or not? If so, why does not Labour openly renounce unilateralism? If not, how can the Soviets possibly be expected to agree to remove SS-20 missiles, knowing that Labour will eliminate cruise even if the SS-20s are retained?
