HOME AFFAIRS – FAMILY MIGRATION & ASYLUM SEEKERS - 11 June 2012

Dr Julian Lewis: What will be the effect of the package on asylum seekers who come without their spouse or children? In particular, some asylum seekers fail to get asylum but cannot, for one reason or another, be sent back. There are also genuine asylum seekers to whom we are happy to grant asylum. Will they be able to bring their families to join them?

[The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mrs Theresa May): Asylum seekers will have the same rights to apply to be here in the UK as they have currently. The package is for those who want to bring non-EU people as spousal partners; it does not affect people who are here genuinely as asylum seekers and who have been given the protection of this country.]
