Although evaluations of Michael Heseltine's political career will inevitably focus on his dangerous commitment to European union and his disastrous campaign against Margaret Thatcher, there is another side to the coin.
When he was Defence Secretary at a crucial turning-point in the Cold War, he did not hesitate to unleash a deadly counter-campaign against the nuclear disarmers in the Labour Party and CND. I shall always be grateful for the courage and panache with which he fought to preserve this country's nuclear deterrent.
